Mercedes A & B Servicing

Your Mercedes needs to be serviced regularly using the correct parts and service plan. From 2009, Mercedes designed a specific maintenance schedule, advising which type of service your vehicle needs and what is involved for each. For clear servicing requirements on your vehicle, Mercedes have conveniently named them A and B services.

Best of all, your Mercedes vehicle will now prompt you when you need to take yours for a service and which specific service is due next.

Here are the differences between Mercedes A and B services and how Donnellan Auto Services can take care of all of your Mercedes service needs all at better value than a dealership.

What is a Mercedes-Benz A Service?

A Mercedes A service is a service that is required after the first year of ownership (or 16,000 kms) and then every 2 years thereafter. It is the smaller of the two types of services and involves inspections, checks and adjustments, covering the following:

What is included in an A service?

  • Synthetic Motor Oil Replacement to ensure the engine components are lubricated and cooled well.
  • Oil Filter Replacement to prevent harmful elements flowing into and causing damage to the engine.
  • Tyre Inflation Check & Correction to ensure the vehicle is safe. Preventing uneven tyre wear and for optimum fuel efficiency.
  • Brake Component Inspection for safety critical functioning of the brakes and ensuring no wear out on components.
  • Reset Maintenance Counter after the warning message on the dash appears, your service garage needs to reset this message and update service records on the logbook and Mercedes system.

What is a Mercedes-Benz B Service?

The Mercedes B service is more thorough and particularly useful for older Mercedes models (or those who drive more distance in a year).  Mercedes B Services are costlier than A services due to their extensive inspection and part replacement processes. A B service needs to take place roughly one year after an A service and in two-year (or 32,000 kms) intervals. This all depends on the amount of mileage you do per year, and your Mercedes vehicle will display a message on the dashboard telling you when a B service is due.

What is included in a B service?

  • Synthetic Motor Oil Replacement to ensure the engine components are lubricated and cooled well.
  • Oil Filter Replacement to prevent harmful elements flowing into and causing damage to the engine.
  • Tyre Inflation Check & Correction to ensure the vehicle is safe. Preventing uneven tyre wear and for optimum fuel efficiency.
  • Brake Component Inspection for safety critical functioning of the brakes and ensuring no wear out on components.
  • Cabin Dust/Combination Filter Replacement to prevent outside pollen and dust from entering the cabin.
  • Reset Maintenance Counter after the warning message on the dash appears, your service garage needs to reset this message and update service records on the Mercedes system or logbook.

Levels of A and B servicing for Older Mercedes Models

Older Mercedes models have more specific A and B services that users may be notified about via a warning message on the dash. Messages such as A7 service or B4 service may appear and are additional servicing of certain components alongside a standard A and B service plan. Here is a breakdown of what they mean:

  • A0 or B0 Service – Sunroof cleaning and lubrication, with spark plug renewal for certain models.
  • A1 or B1 Service – Brake fluid replacement
  • A2 or B2 Service – Brake fluid replacement and sunroof cleaning and lubrication
  • A3 or B3 Service – Air filter replacement and spark plug renewal
  • A4 or B4 service – Air filter replacement, spark plug renewal, and sunroof cleaning and lubrication
  • A5 or B5 Service – Air filter replacement, spark plug renewal, brake fluid replacement
  • A6 or B6 Service – Air filter replacement, spark plug renewal, brake fluid replacement and sunroof cleaning and lubrication
  • A7 or B7 Service – Automatic transmission oil replacement and transmission filter replacement.
  • A8 or B8 Service – Automatic transmission oil replacement, transmission filter replacement and sunroof cleaning and lubrication.
  • A9 or B9 Service – Automatic transmission oil replacement, transmission filter replacement and brake fluid replacement.

How Do I know when my Mercedes needs a service?

A message or warning light will display on your dashboard, informing you how long until your next service. If no warning message appears, you can find it within your vehicle settings.

Within your Mercedes dashboard screen, find the service menu. Then find the ASSYST PLUS feature and enter it. A message will display on the dash and inform you which service and how many days until your next service is due.

Case Study on Donnellan Auto Services Mercedes Servicing

Our Recent customer came in for a routine A Service on their E Class. Our expert technicians know everything about the Mercedes A Service schedule meaning we handled the job fabulously.

E Classes are carefully engineered Mercedes vehicles and each service our technician undertakes performs checks on:

  1. Lights, windows, wipers, and mirrors.
  2. Horn, hazard lights, air conditioning and seat belts.
  3. Steering, suspension, and drive system.
  4. Brake pads, discs, and brake fluid.
  5. Under the bonnet inspection for faults or leaks. Air filter, oil filter, spark plugs, belts etc are replaced if required.
  6. Under the vehicle checks are performed including the removal of trays, oil drained and inspection of transmission for leaks, rust, or corrosion.
  7. Tyre tread, pressure and alignment are measured.
  8. Antifreeze levels inspected and topped up if required
  9. Engine oil refilled and service history updated.

It is a good job our technicians are very thorough when it comes to customer safety – our Mercedes service specialist found a worn-out auxiliary belt. This Mercedes E-Class was in urgent need of a replacement to prevent catastrophic damage.

The Auxiliary belt is part of the engine that drives the alternator, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump and water pump. Without a functioning aux belt, a car could overheat, lose battery power and electrics, and not steer properly which is extremely unsafe. These wear out over time due to their rubber construction and need replacing every 80,000-160,000 kms. Thankfully we caught it before the customer was left stranded.

After consulting the customer, our technician expertly replaced the auxiliary belt, ensuring optimum function of the charging system and Air Conditioning. To be 100% sure of a satisfied customer he inspected the other belts and overall condition of the engine bay to ensure there was no damage.

Our technician then topped up the air in the tyres to the recommended level, performed the oil and filter changes, reset the service schedule. Before inserting the new air filter and updating the service records online and in the logbook.

We make sure every job follows manufacturer guidelines and specifications to ensure that the vehicle drives and performs as the manufacturer intended. We work hard to achieve the highest levels of customer service – and our testimonials pay homage to this. Treating each and every customer and task in the same friendly and efficient manner. We only use the recommended OEM or highest quality parts available when undergoing our services too.

As a result, the customer saved time and was able to carry on their day, knowing their Mercedes was safe to drive, had been correctly serviced and saved €€s compared to the main dealer.
